BROKEN ARROW — Six Broken Arrow Public Schools staff members and two students were recognized as heroes Monday for their quick responses that saved the lives of a student and a coach this school year.
Staff members Dean Davis, Mike Humphrey, Julia Price, Paul Croft, Daniel Steward and Taylor Coatsworth, as well as students Avery Mize and Chance Holloway, were recognized by Broken Arrow Fire Chief Jeremy Moore, Assistant Fire Chief Mark Steward, Mayor Craig Thurmond and school district leaders at Monday’s school board meeting.
Physical education teachers Davis and Humphrey, along with Price, a school nurse, were recognized for their response when Taylor Malonson, a high school senior, collapsed and became unresponsive during a weightlifting class Nov. 28.

Davis, Humphrey and Price used CPR and an automated external defibrillator, or AED, to attempt to resuscitate Malonson, shocking his heart four times before emergency responders arrived, according to the school administration.
Malonson had a pulse again before he was taken by ambulance to a hospital, from which he was released about a week later.
